What Is Gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.

Why Gluten Free Lipstick?

Great question.  Let’s first agree that anything you put on your mouth will be in your mouth, and ingested.  It’s impossible to wear lipstick and not consume at least some of it.

While no one knows exactly why, there has been a growing problem of people becoming sick from ingesting modern-day gluten proteins.  Like, really sick.  The previous decade of research has turned out a lot of quality, peer reviewed science around the subject of gluten intolerance, and the long term negative effects to the body.

Doctors now recommend that women with a gluten intolerance switch to a completely gluten-free brand of cosmetics in order to avoid accidental ingestion of Gluten.

What Makes Gluten Free Lipstick Different?

Gluten Free lipsticks are made without using any wheat based binders in the base of the lipstick. There are many benefits from making lipstick this way.  The base of a lipstick is the basic, starting composition of the lipstick – before any other ingredients, like colorants, emulsifiers, and preservatives (if any).  

When we speak of a “line” of lipsticks, we are describing the base from which all resulting colors are made. For instance, here at Red Apple Lipstick we produce 6 lines of lipsticks, all of which are gluten free.

The formulas we use to make our lipstick bases are formulas that were used many decades ago, before most cosmetics manufacturing was moved out of the USA. (Red Apple Lipstick produces all of our products in the USA).

It so happens that the formulas we use were crafted before the use of wheat based binders.  

The result is not only a gluten-free lipstick, but a far more luxurious product too both in its feel and its performance.

Why is this important?

Making our products in the USA provides huge benefits.  One major benefit is it shortens the life cycle from when we make it to your lips. 

Because we make our own lipsticks and then ship them direct to you, we do not need to use specific stabilizers, plasticizers, preservatives and binders that are required in mass-production overseas. (products made overseas have a very long life cycle from manufacturer, to dock, to shipping container, to boat, to dock, through customs, to warehouse, to region, to warehouse, to storeroom, to shelf and finally, to you).

Making our products locally allows us the freedom to create luxurious, Gluten-Free, Paraben Free lipsticks. When you buy a Red Apple Lipstick, it is at its peak of freshness made in just the recent weeks.

Am I Gluten Intolerant

If I haven’t been diagnosed Gluten Intolerant, Should I Be Concerned About Using Gluten Free Lipstick?

Yes, and here’s how WE feel about it.

Within the context of modern day agriculture (we’ll refer to this as the GMO era) we feel that most wheat grown today has been altered significantly enough to have unforeseen consequences.

While we don’t have empirical evidence, How else do we explain the recent, and rapid onset of gluten intolerance cases over the previous 2 decades.

Therefore, if we can limit or avoid modern wheat (and there are many benefits to doing so from a dietary standpoint) why shouldn’t we?

Especially when it’s easy as far as your lipstick is concerned AND you receive a better, more luxurious, higher performing lipstick at the same time.

How does Red Apple Lipstick Deal With Cross Contamination?

Cross-Contamination is a BIG DEAL, and one we understand thoroughly.  

Cross-Contamination with regards to Gluten occurs when both products that contain wheat and products that are not to contain wheat are processed in the same facility or the same machinery.

Even DUST is enough to cross contaminate a product.

Lucky for you, since we only produce gluten free cosmetics, and nothing else, gluten is never introduced to our production lines or facility. 

Are Red Apple Lipstick Gluten Free Lipsticks Certified or Tested?

Yes. Red Apple Lipstick tests all Lipstick formulas at 2 labs.

• BIA Diagnostics Lab – a Lab that specializes in testing for gluten.
• Applied Technical Services – a Lab that specializes in the detection of heavy metals, such as lead and nickel.

All new formulas are tested before production, and again after first production. And then again periodically as needed.

• No Talc – We are committed to never using Talc in any product. (found in colorants)
• Petroleum & Mineral Oil – We do not use any petroleum based ingredients in any product, especially lipstick! (this has become all too common with the use of Plasticizers)
• No Chemical Toxins – Gross.  There is no need for chemicals in properly made lipsticks.
