Why You Shouldn’t Wear Foundation this Summer

Summer No Makeup

Sometimes it’s a good idea to take a vacation from wearing makeup. Especially from base products such as foundation and concealer.

Summertime is the perfect time to do so since you probably won’t want to wear much makeup in the heat anyway.

But what exactly do we mean when we say not to wear face makeup? Don’t worry, you don’t have to stop wearing makeup altogether (even though it’s a good idea, when possible).

What we mean is take a break from wearing heavy makeup products like foundations and concealers. You can still use makeup if you want to, we suggest using minimal products.

There are two main reasons for wearing no makeup/face makeup in the summer, and in this post, we will be going over them as well as some recommendations on what products will be great to use.

Why Is Wearing Face Makeup In The Summertime Heat Bad?

It’s Just Too HOT!! Ugh!

Wearing products that are too heavy, or using many layers of products can get really messy with the heat. You can experience any of the following:

  • sweating
  • greasy looking skin/oily skin
  • makeup not lasting/melting

These are just some of the issues you can end up having when wearing a full face of makeup in the summer’s heat. The biggest issue with heavy face makeup in the summertime is that you run the risk of it not lasting.

This is because your makeup might rub off or start melting if you start sweating. (it’s never pretty!) If this has happened to you, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.

You could also end up looking super greasy if you wear heavy-based products. To avoid most of this simply skip your base makeup. You will end up saving some money too since you won’t need to buy a deeper shade of foundation for summer.

You can still use other products if you want, (you know you want to) especially if you still want to look put together. A simple go-to look for summer could just simply be using a little bit of bronzer, either a bit of blush or no blush, mascara, lip balm, and lipstick or lip gloss. It’s super easy and very lightweight.

So when it gets too hot, you won’t have to worry about your foundation melting and looking like a hot mess. I hate it when this happens to me, ugh. Wearing a few, but stable products will always stay in place.

For an even more natural and super quick look, simply swipe on some mascara and a lipstick or a gloss, and you are good to go. Best of all, Red Apple Lipstick has you covered with plenty of options to choose from.

Sundrop Bronzer and Gotta Glow blush are also both very stable makeup items in the heat. So are our lip glosses, and that’s why they are among our favorite go-to’s for summer.

Of course, there are those times when we do want, or need, to wear more makeup including some kind of base makeup. Make sure to check both the How to Transition Your Makeup Routine for Summer and Best 9 Tips for How to Sweat-Proof Makeup articles for some great tips and suggestions.

Is Wearing Face Makeup In The Summer Bad For Your Skin’s Health?

The straight answer is Yes, it sure can be.

The next BIG reason why it’s good to go makeup-less in the summer, and probably the most important one, is for your skin’s health.

It’s a wonderful idea to give your skin a break from so many products. To keep our skin healthy, it needs to be able to breathe. Our pores can’t breathe when they are constantly filled and covered with layers of makeup product. Plus with the sweat and excess oils caused by the heat, they end up clogged. And this can then cause bigger skin problems.

Summertime is indeed the best time to give the skin that much-needed break since wearing too much makeup during summer is not the best idea anyway.

We aren’t saying to not use any makeup at all, we suggest wearing makeup only when you need to. When you do not have to, don’t, and just let your skin shine.

If you will be out when it’s hot or say for example if you are going to the beach or even just running errands, just put on some SPF and some oversized sunglasses! (You can also put on a lip gloss.) You will look cute while letting that beautiful skin of yours breathe.

Your skin will thank you and will stay healthy. Plus, you will spend less time getting ready and more time having fun doing all those summer activities you have planned.

Speaking about healthy skin, do remember to stay hydrated! Drinking plenty of water will prevent your skin from getting dehydrated, helping to maintain a healthy glow.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is it okay to wear makeup in the summer?

Summer is surely the best time to go makeup-free. That being said though, it is quite fine to wear makeup if you want and wish to do so. We just suggest using lightweight products, and as minimal products as possible.

2. Should I wear makeup when it’s really hot?

It’s really a personal choice, but wearing a full face of makeup can end up feeling too heavy and end up running/melting on you. So, if you have to wear makeup, or want to, keep it light. Choose lightweight foundations or a tinted moisturizer, you can even skip foundation altogether and just spot conceal. Lightweight and minimal makeup is the key for hot weather.

3. Does makeup age my skin?

According to dermatologists, makeup does not age the skin. However, there are certain ingredients in makeup products that can potentially work against the skin’s natural aging process. So do your research, avoid makeup products that contain potentially harmful ingredients, and choose products with safer and nourishing ones instead. Most importantly, give your skin a break every so often and just let it breathe.
